Run-flat tyres — repair, replace, or switch.

BMW, Mini and Mercedes drivers ask us about run-flats every week. Here’s the honest answer to all of it — when they can be repaired, when they can’t, what we stock, and whether to switch out of them.

What is a run-flat tyre?

A run-flat tyre has a reinforced sidewall that can support the weight of your car even at zero air pressure. The standard rating is “up to 50 miles at 50mph” after pressure loss — far enough to get to a workshop without changing a wheel on the hard shoulder. BMW, Mini, Mercedes (some) and now most major manufacturers offer run-flats as OE.

The trade-offs: stiffer sidewall means slightly firmer ride, slightly more road noise, and a 15-25% price premium over non-runflat equivalents. The benefit: you don’t need a spare wheel (most modern BMWs and Minis don’t even have a spare wheel well), and a sudden blowout is far more controllable.

The critical rule

If you’ve driven on a run-flat while it was flat, it must be replaced. The sidewall has been structurally overheated and is no longer safe. If you have a slow leak that you spotted before driving on a flat tyre, a central-tread puncture can usually still be repaired safely.

Can a run-flat be repaired? The decision tree

  1. Where is the damage? Central tread = potentially repairable. Sidewall = always replacement.
  2. How did you find it? TPMS warning before driving = potentially repairable. Driving on it flat = replacement.
  3. How long was it flat for? Caught immediately = potentially repairable. Drove more than a couple of miles flat = replacement.
  4. What does the inside look like? We inspect the inside surface for the tell-tale heat marks of a run-flat that has been compromised. Clean inside = repairable. Burnt/glazed = replacement.

Honest verdict given in person, every time. We’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing.

Switching out of run-flats

Many BMW and Mini owners switch from run-flats to standard tyres for the softer ride. We can do this — same-day, at the workshop. The trade-offs:

  • Softer ride, particularly noticeable on rough UK roads
  • Quieter cabin — RFT road noise is the main complaint
  • 10-20% cheaper per tyre over the long term
  • Wider brand choice — every brand makes non-RFT
  • Need a sealant kit in the boot (we supply one)

FAQ

Run-flat questions, answered.

Can a run-flat tyre always be repaired?+
No — and this is the critical question. If you have driven on the tyre while it was flat (even briefly), the sidewall has likely been overheated and structurally compromised. In that case the tyre MUST be replaced, even if the puncture itself looks small. If you spotted the puncture before driving on it (TPMS warning, slow leak overnight), and the damage is in the central tread zone, it can usually be safely repaired with a plug-and-patch.
How do I know if I’ve driven on it flat?+
TPMS warning lights, a wobbly or pulling steering feel, audible thumping, or visible bulges/flat spots on the sidewall — any of these mean you’ve been driving on it flat. Modern run-flats allow 50 miles at 50mph after pressure loss, but every minute on a flat run-flat damages the carcass. When in doubt, we examine the tyre and tell you honestly.
How much for a run-flat replacement?+
Premium RFTs typically run 15-25% more than non-runflat equivalents. A 19" BMW 5 Series RFT is roughly £170-240 fitted; a 22" X7 SUV RFT can reach £330-450. Mid-tier RFTs from Hankook or Falken (if your car’s manufacturer approves them) bring costs down 20-30%.
What sizes do you stock?+
BMW and Mercedes RFT in the most-common 18-22" sizes are held in stock. Less common sizes (smaller Minis, older 1 Series) are next-day from our distributor in nearly every case. Call with your reg and we’ll check.
Can I switch from run-flats to regular tyres?+
Yes — many owners do. The benefits: softer ride, lower road noise, typically 10-20% cheaper per tyre, more brand choice. The trade-off: you must carry a tyre inflator and sealant kit (or a space saver if your boot has room — many BMWs and Minis don’t have a spare wheel well). We can supply the inflator/sealant kit and talk you through the practical implications honestly.
Will switching out of run-flats affect insurance or warranty?+
Insurance: no — runflat is not a regulated requirement. Warranty: technically your manufacturer can argue that they specified RFT for a reason (some have run-flat-specific TPMS calibration). In practice nearly every workshop has done this without issue. We’ll discuss the trade-offs in person before fitting.
Are run-flats safer?+
They’re different. The safety benefit is real: a sudden blowout on a motorway is much more controllable in a run-flat. The trade-off: the stiffer sidewall makes the ride harsher and many drivers find them less progressive at the limit. Net safety verdict: marginally positive overall, but the gap is small for most drivers.
Do you stock run-flats for EVs?+
Yes — BMW i3, i4, iX, and Mini Electric all ship with RFT and we stock the popular sizes. Pirelli Elect and Bridgestone Turanza Enliten variants are the EV-optimised choices.
