Puncture Repair

Not every puncture means a new tyre. Where the damage is within the safe-repair zone (centre tread, not sidewall), we vulcanise a permanent plug-and-patch repair. Honest assessment first — if it cannot be repaired safely, we say so.

Half the punctures we see can be safely repaired. The other half need replacement — and we tell you which is which honestly, with the tyre in hand and the damage visible. The British Standard for tyre repair (BS AU 159) is clear: damage within the central tread zone (the middle 75% of the tyre width), through a hole no larger than 6mm, on a tyre with at least 1.6mm of remaining tread, can be repaired with a vulcanised internal plug-and-patch combination. Damage outside those rules — sidewall, shoulder, large holes — must be replaced. We follow the standard exactly.

A proper repair is two parts: a plug from the inside fills the puncture path, and a patch bonded to the inner liner seals the air. The repair is permanent and matches the original tyre safety rating. Cheaper "external plug" repairs (stick-on from the outside) are not BS-compliant and we don't do them.

Most repairs take 25-45 minutes. £45 fitted including dynamic re-balance and pressure-reset. If it can't be repaired safely we'll show you exactly why, and quote a replacement from stock.

How it works

  1. 1. Bring it in or we come to you

Workshop drop-in within working hours. Mobile callout available 24/7 — £45-65 depending on location.

  2. 2. Remove the wheel, inspect inside and out

We check inside the tyre for hidden secondary damage — sometimes a nail caused other carcass injury invisible from outside.

  3. 3. Verdict — repair, replace, or escalate

Within 5 minutes of inspection. We show you the damage. Repair quoted £45 fitted; replacement quoted from stock.

  4. 4. BS-compliant plug-and-patch

If repair: clean and rough the puncture path, mushroom-plug from the inside, vulcanise a rubber patch to the inner liner. 25-45 min.

  5. 5. Re-balance and refit

Dynamic re-balance to ≤5g — we don't just refit a repaired wheel without rebalancing.

  6. 6. Pressure-set and TPMS reset

Set to door-jamb specification, reset your dashboard warning. You drive away with the system showing clear.

Local picture

Surrey roads chew tyres. We see a lot of A3 pothole punctures (especially on the New Malden-Wisley stretch), a lot of M25 hard-shoulder nail jobs, and a lot of Hampton Court car park glass-and-screw incidents around the palace. The most common repairable damage we see is a single nail in the centre tread on a Range Rover or BMW X5 from a building-site lorry-route mile-marker — typical 15-minute fix, customer driving away in under an hour.

FAQ

Puncture Repair — your questions, answered

What punctures can be repaired?+
Damage in the central tread zone (middle 75% of the tyre), through a hole 6mm or less, on a tyre with 1.6mm+ remaining tread, with no sidewall or shoulder damage. Anything outside that = replacement. We follow BS AU 159 exactly.
Why won't you repair a sidewall puncture?+
The sidewall flexes thousands of times per minute at motorway speed. A patch on a sidewall fails — sometimes catastrophically at speed. Legally repairable? Yes. Safe? No. We don't do it.
How long does a repaired tyre last?+
For the full remaining life of the tyre. A BS-standard plug-and-patch is permanent. We've had customers come back 30,000 miles later with the same tyre still rolling fine.
Is a repaired tyre as safe as a new one?+
Yes, when done to BS AU 159 standard. The repair restores the original carcass integrity. Insurance and MOT testers treat repaired tyres no differently from unmarked tyres.
Can run-flats be repaired?+
Yes, if you haven't driven on the tyre while flat. Once a run-flat has been driven on at zero pressure, the sidewall is heat-damaged and the tyre must be replaced. We can tell from inspecting the inside — burn marks and glaze patterns are unmistakable.
Why is your repair price higher than the £25 I see online?+
£25 typically buys an external plug — a stick-on from the outside. Quick, cheap, not BS-compliant, and the warranty is on the customer not the tyre. Our £45 buys a proper plug-and-patch from the inside, plus rebalance and TPMS reset. Different job.
Will the repair show on my MOT?+
No. The repair is invisible from the outside, and MOT testers don't check tyre internals. The tyre passes normally — repaired or not.
Can I drive on the tyre before repair?+
Slow leak: yes, top up pressure and drive carefully to us within 24 hours. Fast leak / flat: no — don't risk damaging the sidewall or rim. Call us to come to you, or use the manufacturer's sealant kit until we arrive.
