Wheel balancing isn't glamorous, but it's the difference between a smooth motorway cruise and a steering-wheel that buzzes from 60 mph. Even a perfectly-balanced new tyre will go out of balance over time — wheel weights lose adhesion, mud and grit collect inside the rim, and brake-dust build-up shifts the centre of mass. By 15,000-20,000 miles, most wheels are 5-15 grams out of balance per corner. You feel it as a vibration. Worse, you don't feel that the inside edge of your tyre is wearing in a sawtooth pattern that kills tread life by 30%.

Our Hunter-style dynamic balancer measures the imbalance at two planes (inboard and outboard of the rim) and prints the exact weight needed to within 1 gram. We use both rim-edge clip weights (for steel and most alloys) and adhesive tape weights (for premium alloy rims where clip weights would scratch the finish).

Included free with every tyre we fit. Standalone service £8-15 per wheel for customers bringing in wheels for rebalancing — typically because they've picked up vibration without a puncture, or they've had aftermarket wheels fitted elsewhere.

What’s included

  • Dynamic balancing
  • All rim sizes
  • Run-flat compatible
  • Included with fitting

When you need this

  • Your steering wheel vibrates at motorway speed (typically 60-75 mph)
  • You feel a "bouncing" in the wheel through corners
  • Your tyres are wearing in a saw-tooth or feathered pattern
  • You've had new tyres fitted but the ride feels worse than before
  • You've picked up a wheel weight loss after a kerb hit or fast pothole
  • You drive an EV or hybrid (heavier wheels go out of balance faster)

How it works

  1. 1. Bring the vehicle in

Or book a mobile slot — we balance on-vehicle for some customers.

  2. 2. Wheels off, weighed on the balancer

Hunter-style dynamic balancer measures inboard and outboard imbalance independently.

  3. 3. Old weights removed if needed

We clean the rim seat and rebalance to a clean baseline.

  4. 4. New weights applied

Clip weights for steel/standard alloy. Adhesive tape weights for premium alloys to protect the finish.

  5. 5. Final spin and printout

Confirmed to ≤5 grams per wheel — you keep the printout.

  6. 6. Test drive

Quick test drive to confirm vibration is gone. If anything resists balance — we tell you why (warped rim, tyre out-of-round, etc).

In Surrey

Local picture

Wheels go out of balance fast on Surrey roads. The A3 between Esher and Wisley is notorious for pothole-induced weight loss. The M25 J9-J12 stretch has surface ridges that build up brake dust on the inside rim faster than elsewhere. Most local customers come in once a year for a precautionary rebalance — typically £30 for a full set, payback in tyre life within 6 months.

FAQ

Wheel Balancing — your questions, answered

How often should I rebalance my wheels?+
Every 10,000-15,000 miles, or any time you notice vibration. Free when you fit new tyres with us — so most customers don't need a standalone service often.
Will balancing fix all vibration?+
It fixes ~85% of vibration cases. The other 15% are tyre out-of-round, warped brake disc, worn drive-shaft or wheel-hub bearings. We diagnose the rest of the chain if balancing doesn't cure it.
Why does an EV need rebalancing more often?+
EV wheels are typically heavier (battery weight + larger rim sizes). Heavier wheels lose balance faster because any weight imbalance creates more rotational force. Tesla Model Y at 65 mph has roughly 1.3× the rotational force of an equivalent petrol crossover.
Will tape weights look ugly on my alloys?+
No — modern tape weights sit on the inboard face of the rim, hidden behind the spokes. Invisible from outside. Used on every premium OE wheel from the factory (Porsche, Audi, BMW M-Sport).
Can you balance on-vehicle?+
Yes for some cases — we have a portable on-vehicle balancer for stubborn cases where off-vehicle balancing doesn't cure the vibration. Adds £15 per wheel. Diagnoses suspension-induced vibration as well.
Are wheel weights legal in the UK?+
Yes — required, in fact. MOT testers check for missing weights. Lead-based weights are being phased out in favour of zinc and steel; we use only lead-free since 2024.
