About Continental

Continental was founded in Hanover in 1871, making it one of the oldest tyre brands still in production. It’s the OE choice for more European cars than any other brand — most VW Group vehicles, a huge proportion of BMWs, Mercedes, and Porsches ship from the factory on Continentals.

The range centres on three pillars: SportContact for performance, PremiumContact for comfort, and CrossContact / AllSeasonContact for SUVs and seasonal needs. SportContact 7 finished a single point behind the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S in the 2026 ACE Summer Tyre Test — and beat it for wet braking distance.

Continental’s engineering focus is wet-grip and braking distance. The BlackChilli compound is heat-resistant — meaning the tyre maintains grip when driven hard rather than going off after a few minutes of motorway driving. For UK drivers (where rain is an everyday consideration), Continental is one of the safest bets in the market.

Signature technology

  • BlackChilli compound (heat-resistant)
  • ContiSeal self-sealing
  • ContiSilent foam noise reduction
  • GreenChili low-rolling-resistance

Continental in Surrey

Continental is the default we fit on most VW Group cars in Surrey (Audi A3 through Q8, VW Golf through Touareg, Porsche Cayenne and Macan) because they shipped from the factory on it and customers prefer the consistency. SportContact 5 SUV is one of our most-fitted 22" SUV tyres for X5, X7 and GLE.

FAQ

Continental — your questions, answered

Why is Continental the default on so many German cars?+
A combination of geography (Continental is based in Hanover, close to VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes engineering centres), shared engineering history, and a willingness to spec tyres specifically for individual platforms. Most German premium cars ship with Continental as one of three approved OE options.
SportContact 7 vs Pilot Sport 4 S — which is better?+
Honestly very close. SportContact 7 wins on wet braking distance (by 1-2 metres at 50mph) and is usually slightly cheaper. Pilot Sport 4 S wins on outright dry grip at the absolute limit and tread life. For UK roads (where wet handling matters more than absolute dry grip), SportContact 7 is a slightly safer bet.
Does Continental do all-season tyres?+
Yes — AllSeasonContact 2 is the main option. It’s a strong tyre but doesn’t quite match Michelin’s CrossClimate 3 for the UK climate. We fit both, depending on what the customer prioritises.
Can Continental do run-flats?+
Yes — SSR (Self Supporting Runflat) variants are standard for BMW and Mini fitments. We stock the popular sizes.
How long do Continental tyres last?+
Typical real-world: SportContact 7 on a 5 Series — 18,000-24,000 miles. PremiumContact 7 on an A4 — 28,000-36,000 miles. SportContact 5 SUV on an X5 — 22,000-28,000 miles. AllSeasonContact 2 on a daily driver — 30,000+ miles.
Are Continental EV variants worth the extra?+
Yes if you drive an EV. EcoContact 6 Q (the EV variant) has a reinforced sidewall to handle the extra battery weight and a compound tuned for the instant torque of an EV motor. Regular EcoContact 6 will wear visibly faster on a Tesla, Polestar or e-tron.
