Winter tyres — when they make sense, what to fit.

Honest advice. For most Surrey drivers an all-season tyre is the smart year-round choice. But if you drive in real winter conditions, true winter tyres are non-negotiable.

Do you need them?

Below 7°C, summer tyre compounds harden and stop working properly — even on a dry road. Winter tyres use a different rubber compound that stays flexible at low temperatures, plus a sipe-heavy tread pattern that bites into snow and slush.

In Surrey, you have three realistic options each winter:

  • Stick with summer tyres. Fine if your car is parked when it’s cold and you don’t drive on icy mornings. Risky for daily commuters and dangerous on a performance car.
  • Switch to a true winter set. The right call if you regularly drive in Wales, the Lakes, Scotland, the Alps, or live somewhere with steep hills. Maximum grip on snow and ice.
  • Fit all-season tyres year-round. The best answer for most Surrey drivers. Modern all-seasons (CrossClimate 3, Vector 4Seasons) carry the same 3PMSF winter certification as dedicated winters but don’t require seasonal swaps.

Our honest recommendation

For 90% of Surrey drivers, all-season is the right call. Winter sets make sense when you have a specific reason — performance car with summer rubber, regular trips north, hill-country home, ski trips to the Alps. See all-season options.

FAQ

Winter tyre questions, answered.

Do I really need winter tyres in Surrey?+
For most Surrey drivers, no — UK winters rarely deliver more than a handful of properly cold days, and modern all-season tyres (Michelin CrossClimate 3, Goodyear Vector 4Seasons) handle our winters well. Dedicated winter tyres make sense if you drive regularly in Wales, the Lakes, Scotland, or the Alps in winter — or if you have a performance car with summer tyres that becomes dangerous below 5°C.
When should I switch to winter tyres?+
The technical answer: when average daily temperatures drop below 7°C. In Surrey that’s typically late October to mid-March. Below 7°C, summer tyre compounds harden and lose grip even when the road looks dry. All-season tyres avoid this trade-off.
What is 3PMSF certification?+
3-Peak Mountain Snowflake — the EU and UN certification that a tyre meets minimum snow-grip standards. All true winter tyres carry it, and the best all-seasons (CrossClimate 3, Vector 4Seasons Gen-3, AllSeasonContact 2) also carry it. Without 3PMSF, a tyre marketed as “winter” or “all-weather” isn’t legally credible.
Can I run winter tyres all year?+
No — winter tyres wear quickly and lose grip in warm weather. Run them October to March, then swap back to summer or all-season. We offer a tyre-storage service between seasons.
Do I need a full set or can I just fit two?+
Always a full set. Mixing winter and summer tyres (or fitting only the driven wheels) creates severe handling imbalance — the car behaves predictably until it doesn’t, often mid-corner. Insurers may also void claims on mixed-tyre vehicles. Four matching tyres, always.
What about all-season tyres instead?+
For 90%+ of Surrey drivers, all-season is the smart answer. Michelin CrossClimate 3 carries the same 3PMSF winter certification as dedicated winters but doesn’t require swapping twice a year. Genuinely "fit and forget" for UK conditions. See our all-season range.
How much for tyre storage between seasons?+
Free storage when you buy a winter set with us. We label, photograph, and store at the workshop for the season — and swap them back for free in March/April.
How long do winter tyres last?+
4-6 winter seasons typical use (40,000-60,000 miles total over multiple seasons). Tread depth still legal isn’t the only check — the rubber hardens over 5-6 years even with good tread depth, so we replace based on age as well as wear.
