What makes a 4×4 tyre different from a car tyre?

SUVs and 4×4s are roughly 30-40% heavier than equivalent saloons, carry their mass higher, and ride on taller, stiffer sidewalls. That changes everything about what the tyre has to do. A Range Rover Vogue sits ~2.6 tonnes on the road; a BMW X7 is similar. The tyres need to do four jobs at once: support the weight, resist heat buildup under load, absorb the impact of larger wheels (21-23" rims are normal now), and stay quiet enough not to ruin the cabin.

SUV-specific tyres are built differently. The carcass uses additional steel-belt and nylon-cap plies for load. Load ratings are higher — XL (Extra Load) or HL (High Load) markings, often 4-6 above what a saloon would need. Tread blocks are squarer to handle cornering forces on a tall vehicle. Shoulder design is reinforced so the tyre doesn’t roll under hard cornering load. Compounds are tuned for the higher slip energy.

Fitting a regular passenger tyre to an SUV will physically fit on the wheel — but the load rating may not match, sidewall flex will feel vague, you’ll get faster shoulder wear, and tread life will drop sharply. We see this often: ten-thousand-mile X5 tyres that should have done twenty-five. We fit the right tyre.

On-road, all-terrain, or off-road?

Three broad categories of 4×4 tyre. The right choice depends entirely on how you actually use the vehicle, not what the badge says.

On-road / Highway

95%+ tarmac, occasional gravel driveway or country lane

The right choice for most Surrey SUVs. Quieter cabin, longer life, better wet braking, noticeably better fuel economy. Worse in mud or snow — but that’s rare in Surrey.

MOST POPULAR

All-terrain (AT)

Tarmac plus occasional off-road — fields, shoots, light trails

The compromise that works for many local 4×4 owners. Aggressive enough tread to handle wet grass and unsealed tracks; refined enough not to roar on the M25.

  • Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO 3
  • Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventure
  • Falken Wildpeak A/T3WA
  • Hankook Dynapro AT2

Off-road / Mud-terrain

Trail use, deep mud, serious off-road work

For Defenders that actually go off-road and proper green-lane vehicles. Aggressive tread, puncture-resistant sidewalls, but loud and short-lived on tarmac. Only fit if you really need it.

Why 4-wheel alignment matters more on SUVs.

Almost every modern SUV has independent suspension across all four corners. That means a kerb hit or pothole strike at the rear is just as costly as one at the front — and only a four-wheel alignment can spot it. Two-wheel alignment (which most quick-fit chains run) checks the front toe and stops there.

We use Hunter-style alignment gauges for the full job: camber, caster, toe, on all four wheels, with a before-and-after readout you take home. Critical on Range Rovers (air suspension can drift over time), BMW X5/X7, Mercedes GLE/GLS, Audi Q7/Q8, Porsche Cayenne — anything that’s thumped a pothole at speed.

Book a 4-wheel alignment

Symptoms — book one if you have any of these

  • Steering pulls to one side on a level road
  • Uneven wear on tyre shoulders or centre
  • Recently hit a pothole, kerb or speed bump at pace
  • Steering wheel off-centre when driving straight
  • Tyres “feathering” or squealing in slow turns
  • Fitting a new set of premium tyres (do it once, properly)

Local picture

Why Surrey is the UK’s 4×4 capital.

Surrey has one of the highest concentrations of 4×4 and SUV ownership in the UK. KT10 (Esher, Cobham, Oxshott) and KT11 are dense with Range Rovers, Cayennes, X5s, GLEs, Q7s. Add in the Bentleys and the working farms, riding schools and country estates around Cobham, Leatherhead and beyond — and you have a lot of vehicles that need specialist tyres and proper four-wheel alignment.

Most national chains either don’t have the lifts rated for 2.6-tonne Range Rovers, or don’t run four-wheel alignment, or both. Our workshop in West Molesey is set up for them — and our mobile vans can fit 22-23" wheels on your driveway in Oxshott or Cobham just as easily as a 17" tyre on a commuter saloon.

FAQ

4×4 tyre questions, answered.

Do 4×4 and SUV tyres really need to be different?+
Yes — meaningfully so. SUVs are typically 30-40% heavier than equivalent saloons, carry their mass higher (worse weight transfer in corners), and ride on taller sidewalls. SUV-specific tyres have reinforced carcasses, higher load ratings (XL or HL), tuned tread blocks to resist heat buildup, and squarer shoulders to handle the extra cornering load. Fitting a regular passenger tyre to an SUV can technically fit, but you lose load capacity, the steering feel goes vague, and tread life drops sharply.
On-road, all-terrain or off-road — which should I get?+
Most Surrey 4×4s should run on-road or all-season tyres. The right answer depends on use: if you spend 95%+ of your time on tarmac with the occasional unmade driveway or country lane, on-road (Pirelli Scorpion, Michelin Latitude Sport, Continental SportContact 5 SUV) is the right call — better grip, lower noise, longer life. If you go off-road for hobbies, fields, or shoots, an all-terrain (AT) tyre like Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO 3, Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventure or Falken Wildpeak A/T3WA gives you genuine off-road bite without ruining road manners. Pure off-road (mud-terrain) only makes sense for trail use vehicles — they roar on tarmac.
Why does 4-wheel alignment matter on an SUV?+
Most SUVs have fully independent suspension across all four corners. That means a kerb hit at the back is as costly as one at the front, and only a four-wheel alignment can spot it. Two-wheel alignment (which most quick-fit chains run) just checks the front toe. We use Hunter-style alignment gauges for the full four-wheel job — camber, caster, toe, front and rear, with a before-and-after readout you can keep. Especially important on Range Rovers (air suspension), X5/X7 and any 4×4 that has thumped a pothole at speed.
How long do 4×4 tyres last?+
Honestly varies. On a Range Rover or X5 driven mostly on tarmac, premium on-road tyres typically deliver 20,000-28,000 miles. Towing, heavy loads, and motorway-heavy driving will pull that down. All-terrain tyres on a Defender or Wrangler typically deliver 15,000-22,000 miles depending on how much of that is off-road. EV SUVs (Tesla X, Audi e-tron, Range Rover P440E) wear ~20% faster than the petrol equivalents because of regenerative braking and instant torque.
Do you stock 22" and 23" tyres for Range Rover?+
Yes — popular Pirelli Scorpion and Continental SportContact 5 SUV fitments in 22" are held in stock. 23" Range Rover Vogue fitments are next-day from our distributor in nearly every case. We have the lifts and air-tools needed for these heavier wheels — the workshop floor is rated for the weight.
Can you do mobile fitting on a Range Rover at home?+
Yes. Our vans carry the kit and torque tools for 22-23" wheel fitments and we routinely do mobile fits for Range Rovers, X7s, GLS and similar in driveways across KT8, KT10 and Cobham. We can also do the wheel alignment in the workshop separately if you bring the car in afterwards.
Do EV SUVs need special tyres?+
Strongly recommended. EV SUVs are heavier (large battery packs) and deliver instant torque, both of which wear regular tyres faster. EV-specific tyres (Pirelli Scorpion Elect, Michelin Primacy 5 EV, Bridgestone Turanza Enliten, Continental EcoContact 6 Q) have reinforced sidewalls, optimised compounds for the extra load, and noise-cancelling tech important on a silent EV cabin. Range can drop 5-10% on the wrong tyre.
What about run-flats on BMW X5/X7?+
BMW X5/X7 and most current Mercedes SUVs ship with run-flat tyres as standard. We stock the common Pirelli, Continental and Bridgestone RFT sizes. If you've had a flat warning light, the tyre may still be safely repairable if you haven't driven on it — call us first before assuming replacement.
How much does a full set of 4×4 tyres cost?+
Four premium 22" SUV tyres typically run £1,100-£1,600 fitted, including balancing, valves, disposal and VAT. Mid-tier (Hankook, Falken) for the same size: £750-£1,000. Indicative starting prices for each rim size are in the table above; call with your reg or current tyre size for an exact fitted price.
Will fitting non-OE tyres affect my warranty?+
No, as long as the fitted tyre matches the manufacturer's recommended size, speed rating, and load rating. We always cross-check against the door-jamb placard or handbook before fitting. Some premium SUVs require XL load ratings — we confirm and fit accordingly.
